Why Simulated Learning?

Learning is most effective when it begins with experience. Simulations are experiential learning activities that allow individuals to acquire knowledge and skills in the context of real work scenarios. Online Continuing Medical Education simulations actively engage the learner in the learning process and enable practice, repetition, and discovery that accelerate learning and enhances retention.

About SiMCare Diabetes

How is SiMCare better than other diabetes CME?

SiMCare Diabetes CME uses simulation to replicate actual physician-patient encounters. The SiMCare patient simulation model allows the provider to operate in a safe environment and learn proper diabetes management techniques. Individualized feedback is given to the provider based on the results of their actions with the patient after each encounter. SiMCare allows an unlimited number of encounters with each patient. It is up to the provider to determine the proper medication and insulin dosing, order correct lab and diagnostic tests, and make appropriate referrals to specialists. The provider can also give life-style advice and instructions on self-monitoring blood glucose to the patients. Adherence is built-into the patient model, so just like real life, some of the patients may struggle with making progress and you will need to find ways to improve adherence. SiMCare Diabetes was not funded or sponsored by any pharmaceutical or industry related organization.

How long will each simulated patient case take to complete?

Each case takes roughly 20-45 minutes to complete depending on the experience of the learner. The total time for the 18 cases ranges from 6-14 hours. The cases can be stopped and re-started at any time, and can be done from any location with internet access.

What clinicians will benefit from this learning simulation?

SiMCare Diabetes CME was originally designed for physicians and prescribing clinicians; however we have also designed cases for nurses, pharmacists, and other health care professionals on the care team that help patients manage diabetes.

Is the content and patient model based on evidence-based guidelines?

The learning is consistent with national guidelines such as the American Diabetes Association Practice Recommendations, the Joint National Commission on Treatment of High Blood Pressure and the National Cholesterol Education Program.  The literature base for physiologic modeling of actions is referenced within diabetes information tab of the program.
